Wanganui Glass School, New Zealand’s glass school, in conjunction with UCOL, delivers fully integrated training and education in glass design and production. This includes the internationally recognised full time three year, level 6 Diploma in Glass Design and Production, and the four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts programme majoring in Glass. Typically the classes are made up of students who have recently left school as well as people looking to take up a second career.

Job prospects for graduates The Glass Design & Production course produces lateral and creative thinking graduates who are well versed in design/marketing and managing a small business. These are desirable attributes to today’s employers. As well as a self-employed glass artist, or employed craftsperson working in professional studio, graduates are equipped to work as designers in other business sectors outside of glass art. Glass art The most preferred job prospect available to graduating students is owning a small business. This option can have relatively low overheads, by renting glass making and finishing equipment at the Wanganui Glass School or other established glass businesses.

Job prospects for graduates (cont) Traveling There are other options available such as becoming an assistant to other glass studios in New Zealand or overseas. Some graduates have opted to work their way around the world in glass studios. Further education Wanganui Glass School Design & Production graduates can use their qualification as a solid foundation and stepping stone to future education through the Batchelor of Fine Arts Degree or similar qualification overseas.

What you will learn Wanganui Glass School students are taught by distinguished practicing glass artists who are dedicated to guiding the students In the discovery and development of their specific intellectual, technical, critical and aesthetic abilities. Students work in hot, warm and cold glass techniques including glassblowing, casting, fusing, slumping, sand casting, painted glass, mixed-media sculpture, and engraving. They are encouraged in teamwork, experimentation and conceptual development.

Wanganui’s glass and art scene It’s no secret that Wanganui has a vibrant and talented artistic community. Its galleries and studios feature glass, painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles and indigenous arts and crafts. Discover studio artists tucked away in many of the heritage buildings. Of particular note is the glass art with Wanganui having 30 practicing glass artists, many of them well known internationally. On the hill in Queen’s Park, sits the Sarjeant Gallery.
