HOW TO PICK A SCHOOL DON’T

PICK A PROGRAM CORRECT PROGRAM = DECIDE  WHAT to study,  then WHERE. Be as independent as possible. Ask questions  don’t rely on the opinions of others  or the reputation of a school. You are the one who must live with the decision You make.

Graduation Requirements ≠ Post-Secondary Entrance Requirements

UNIVERSITY  Grant Degrees  All offer Undergraduate Degrees(Bachelor) – 3-4 years Some offer graduate (Master) and Post Graduate (Doctorate)  More theoretical learning  House Professional Programs  Medicine, teacher’s colleges, dental schools, law schools etc. These programs generally require an undergraduate degree for entry.

UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE Entrance requirement  Secondary School Diploma  Six courses at University “4U” or Mixed “4M”  Program specific prerequisite courses Minimum grade requirements.  Varies between schools and programs Don’t discriminate between U or M level courses

COLLEGE Offer diploma (2-3 years) and certificate programs (1 year) Some offer “Applied Degrees” Tend to be more “career oriented” than Universities More practical and hands-on training Have pre-trades, apprenticeship, and skills development Post diploma programs also available

COLLEGE ENTRANCE Minimum requirement is secondary school diploma Most schools require most courses at college level (C courses) – U or M level also accepted. Prerequisite courses Competitive courses have minimum grade requirements or additional testing Don’t discriminate between U, C or M level courses

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS CO-OP / Internships / Placements School size Location Cost Campus Transportation Residences / Meal Plans School assessments – McLean’s, Globe and Mail, and your friends and families. Where friends are going

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Summer – start the investigation  Program and schools  Visit schools  Talk to friends and family Fall - continue the investigation  Talk with Guidance  Visit with school representatives when they visit  Come to the fall information night  November / December MAKE THE DECISION  Applications are done online  Acceptances are received in the spring

Proper research is important If a student is not sure they can apply to both University and College If they are not sure whether they should apply they generally should. A lot of changes occur between November and June. Regrets are difficult. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER BUT INSURANCE DOESN’T HURT

IMPORTANT DATES UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS  January 13, 2016 – final date for submission of applications  WE DO OURS BEFORE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS!  In school at lunch or MSIP  Bring a credit card # (including 3 digit number on the back)  Cost $ 150 for 3 schools + $50 for each additional school  May 27, 2016 – final date a student can expect to hear from the school  June 1, 2016 – earliest date a university can expect financial commitment.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS WE DO APPLICATIONS BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS! Equal Consideration Date – February 1, 2016  In school at lunch or MSIP  Bring a credit card # (including 3 digit number on the back) Cost $ for a total of 5 schools or 5 programs  No more than 3 program choices at one school You may start to hear from your schools as early as February 1, 2016
