Culture In the Times Square area is one of the world’s greatest collection of theatres. This group of about 40 theatres offers drama, musicals and comedy. The New York Library is one of the best research libraries in the world. The New York City Ballet is the most famous ballet company in the country, and classical music concerts are held in Carnegie Hall.

Much of the food usually associated with New York City stems in part from its large community of Eastern European Jews and their descendants. Much of New York City's Jewish fare has become popular around the globe, especially bagels. New York City's Jewish community is also famously fond of Chinese food, and many members of this community think of it as their second ethnic food.

New York-style pizza originated in New York City in the early 1900s, and in 1905, the first pizza establishment in the United States was opened in New York’s Little Italy. The first pizzeria in America was founded in 1905 by Gennaro Lombardi in Little Italy, Manhattan. The price for a pizza was five cents. In the year 2010, over 400 pizza restaurants were listed as existent in the city. The New York-style of pizza tends to dominate some of the North- eastern states, notably New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Additionally, variations of New York-style pizza are existent in North- eastern states. Outside of the Northeast, many pizzas are described as "New York style," including some by major pizza chains such as Pizza Hut.

People Ellis Islands was once the main entry point for immigrants to the United States. Early immigrants included the English, Irish, Scots and Scandinavians. New York City has one of the largest Jewish communities in the world.

The first national basketball championship for major colleges, the National Invitation Tournament, was held in New York City in 1938 In 1988, the New York Knights played for one season as part of the Arena Football League, and then stopped operations. In 1997, another AFL team was founded, the New York City Hawks and then relocated to Toronto in 2001 and renamed as the Toronto Phantoms, at which point the AFL's Iowa Barnstormers relocated to Long Island and were renamed the New York Dragons.

American Football is a sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field 120 yards long by yards wide with goalposts at each end. The ball they use is an oval ball. American football evolved in the United States, originating from the sport of rugby football. The first game of American football was played on November 8, 1869, between two college teams, Rutgers and Princeton, under rules resembling rugby and soccer.
