When the atomic bomb called “little boy” was dropped onto Hiroshima, the main military base in Tokyo was unable to contact the base in Hiroshima for a long while. After exhausting their resources, they sent a young soldier out to survey the damage on the city and report back with accurate information. The Tokyo military base really believed that it was only rumors. Tokyo’s first knowledge of the bombing came from a White House public announcement in Washington approximately 16 hours after the bombing took place. In 1945, an estimated number of 60,000 people died from nuclear fallout sickness. This does not include casualties from radiation exposure.
