Mountain Men Who were the Mt. Men? Tough Independent men who spent most of their time in the Rocky Mts. hunting & trapping animals for their furs. They lived in buffalo-skin lodges, dressed in fringed buckskin pants, moccasins, and beads. Many had Native American wives Why were they important in the settlement of the West? 1 st Americans to settle in the West. After the decline of the fur trade, some settled on farms in Oregon and others due to their knowledge of the land became guides who led settlers west
