6 th Grade Field Trip to Nashville Zoo May 30 th, 2014

Nashville Zoo Team Hope, Team Perseverance, and Team Caring will be traveling to the Nashville Zoo on Friday, May 30 th. We will leave the school at 8:15, tour the zoo, eat at Opry Mills, and return to FSMS by 2:30.

Daily Activities Jungle Gym Keeper Talks - Check out the schedule below, then go to the exhibit listed to meet our keepers. 9:30 a.m. Anaconda 11 a.m. Stork 11:30 a.m. Red Ruffed Lemur

Featured Exhibit The cassowary is a keystone species to Australia and New Guinea playing a vital role in the growth of the rainforest. Known as the Gardener of the Rainforest, cassowaries can germinate more than 200 species of plants, thus providing food for other species. Unfortunately, their populations are declining due to loss of habitat, vehicle strike, dog attacks and overhunting. They are considered endangered in Australia with an estimated population between 1,500 to 2,500 birds. In captivity, breeding of this species has been very limited, and as a result the captive population’s genetic diversity is low.

Preparing for the Trip The weather is supposed to be warm Friday, May 30 th, so dress coolly. Weather is unpredictable, so please bring a jacket or umbrella just in case of rain. Also, remember to wear shoes which you will be comfortable walking around the zoo for a while. Speaking of dressing coolly, let’s remember the dress code: – Wear shorts/pants that reach your knees or longer. – Wear shirts that have sleeves (no tanks/spaghetti straps, etc.)

Don’t forget to bring… (optional) Money for the gift shop if you would like to purchase items. You will have to keep up with whatever you buy. (optional) sunglass and/or a hat (optional but strongly suggested) sunscreen (necessary) Money for lunch at Opry Mills

Please DON’T bring… Your cell phone. School rules still apply. Violations will be written up once returned to the school. A large backpack. There’s not enough room.

CATS C – Cooperate with others A – Act responsibly T – Treat others with respect S – Show a positive attitude We will expect you to follow guidelines for success during the duration of the field trip. Let’s show Nashville what great leaders we are!

While at the zoo Speak at a moderate level as to not disturb other groups visiting the zoo or the animals. Travel with your homeroom/bus group.

While at Opry Mills Students will NOT be allowed to enter in to any surrounding stores. You will have approximately one hour to eat. You get to choose the restaurant at which you would like to eat – Green Leaf’s – Maki of Japan – Pyramids Café – Kelly’s Cajun Grill – Charley’s Grilled Subs – Panda Express – Burger King – Villa Fresh Italian Kitchen – Starbucks – Sweet CeCe’s
