Student expectations of the green campus Students have watched their institutions replicate the problems that lead to the creation of climate change Students want universities to become a force for change Huge gaps exist between what universities teach, what they do and what theyre capable of doing – this must change! Student expectations of the green campus

What is People & Planet? The UK's largest student network campaigning on human rights, poverty and the environment Groups in over 130 universities, schools and colleges Aim to create effective campaigns and to empower active global citizens Student expectations of the green campus

Go Green Campaign Aim: to improve the environmental performance of the entire education system Launched in 2003 Grew out of Green Electricity Campaign – need for institutional change Student expectations of the green campus

Go Green Demands 1) The active, public support of senior university management 2) Full-time staff dedicated to environmental management 3) A written, publicly available environmental policy 4) A comprehensive review Student expectations of the green campus

Students are demanding systemic long lasting change – leadership from the top Students want universities to become a force that can push forward a radical sustainable agenda Students envision an education sector that becomes a leader in the UK economy by demonstrating practically what a sector can do to transform its environmental impact and meet Britains climate responsibilities Student expectations of the green campus

Student campaigners Reading University already has some good environmental policies, including the green electricity policy we campaigned for two years ago. But there is huge room for improvement, especially on recycling. As a pillar of the local community with top departments in meteorology and renewable engineering reading has a special responsibility to take the lead Ross Wilson, Reading P&P group member Having run the campaign for two years and put in a lot of hard work we're actually seeing the difference it's made now. We've got increased recycling provision, sustainable purchasing initiatives and better transport planning but there's still room for improvement and we'll be keeping the pressure on! Alex Sim, Warwick P&P group member Student expectations of the Green Campus

Go Green Extreme! Go Green demands are first steps – building blocks for a green HE sector P&P is creating a collective vision of what students think a truly sustainable university would look like These will be used to produce four new Go Green demands on top of our original four – launched in September You can help your P&P group create this vision Student expectations of the green campus
