Questions?

Daily routine Wake Up! Question / attendance Go over homework or collect homework Review what was done the day before Preview that day’s lesson If the lesson will take until the end of the period or go over to the next class period, homework may be given before we start that day’s lesson Do the lesson Exit question/ question card

Homework You should expect homework every night If you do not have explicit written homework, then you should go to the message board and participate in discussions happening there.

Message/ Discussion board Students are to participate in discussions that are on the message/discussion board every week Topics will be up for about 2 weeks during which time each student should: –Make at least one original post –Respond to at least one other person’s post, preferably asking a question that moves the conversation forward –Do a third post that could be original or a response to a question someone else posted

Message Board cont. Readings that are less than 2 Mb per document will be posted at the Message Board. At the moment there are a few documents about the cheese lab. The only people who can read the message board are students in the biotech class, your parents, and teachers/administrators who told me they want access.

Grades? At the moment all of your grades are falling into the Process of Learning part. You have not been given any assessments yet. What is not Process of Learning? –Most labs –Quizzes –Tests –Some discussions on the Message Board if they demonstrate application of knowledge

How are things weighted? The Process of Learning grade will be about 20-30% of your grade Labs will be about 40-50% of your final grade Tests/quizzes will be about 30 – 50% of your final grade Both quarters will be used to determine the semester grade.

Long Term Projects Book chat –You will be asked to read two books this year, one of which must be non-fiction –Ms Getz has a list of acceptable books that will be put up at the website soon Company report Nanobiotechnology presentation Genetic disease project And maybe more!

Notebooks Proper lab manual- provided by the school Standards/Skills log- notebook provided by the school Classroom binder- provided by the student (but if you need help getting one, let Ms Getz know) You are expected to hold onto all of the papers that are passed out so you can use them for studying Sometimes you will be given papers that you need to turn back in, so please do not lose them

Questions?

Your World Our World Your World/ Our World is a biotech magazine published for high school students We have access to 13 issues In groups of 2 ( with the person at your table) you will pick one issue to read Sign up for the issue you want to do on the sign- up sheet; first come first served You will create a poster showing important factoids about the topic in your issue

Timeline Today and part of Wed- work on making the poster Wed we will also be starting the cheese lab so do not plan on having all day Wed to color a poster Friday- day 2 of cheese lab AND Poster presentations
