Students without Borders : international student mapping project Mike Heffron Policy Assistant NUS Scotland/sparqs

Overview of SwB project Three-year project funded by Scottish Government Involves inward and outward mobility projects Focus in year one: conduct mapping project on behalf of Student Participation in Quality Scotland (sparqs)

What is the project about? How are international students at Scottish Higher Education Institutions engaging in learning and teaching feedback structures? To what extent? What obstacles exist?

What are we asking? What quality assurance/enhancement processes are in place that involve students representatives generally? What support systems are in place for international students regarding learning and teaching?

What are we asking? What works in getting international students involved in representative structures? When and how are international students being informed about learning and teaching representative structures?

Who are we asking? Student association officers, international student officers and SA staff (interviews - ongoing) Institutional staff involved in learning and teaching issues: quality officers, assistant registrars, international office staff, international student support staff (interviews - ongoing) International students (focus groups – autumn 09)

How will it all end? A report will be issued at the beginning of 2010 that will highlight best practice throughout Scotland Goal: help student associations and institutions better involve international students in quality enhancement processes Possible consultancy work
