doc.: IEEE thz Submission October 2012 Thomas Kürner, TU Braunschweig, Germany Current Situation in the Development of THz Communications  Since 2008, when the IG THz was established, manytechnology and market boundary conditions have improved:  Progress in semiconductor technology  see e.g. [1] where data rates of 25 Gbit/s over a distance of 10 m have been demonstrated using MMIC technology  WRC 2012 resulted in a stable situation in terms of spectrum activity  Worldwide many research projects on THz communications have been started,  E. g. big Government funded projects are currently running in Germany, Korea, and Japan  Industry shows some interest now  Recently the International Wireless Industry Cinsortium (IWPC) has established a Millimeter and sub-Millimeter Wave Nanocell Working Group (  CORF spectrum coexistence activity has been initiated with Hz IG and MoGIG

doc.: IEEE thz Submission October 2012 Thomas Kürner, TU Braunschweig, Germany Heading towards a Standard on THz Communications  It‘s time to think about triggering the process of generating standards for THz Communications  Presentations on possible applications [2],[3],[4] have clearly shown that the various applications require also solutions with different technical complexities  As a consequence instead of a single standard rather a set or a family of individually applicable standards may be required  A reasonable starting point is to begin with short range applications that requires less complex solutions, e. g. a kiosk downloading application

doc.: IEEE thz Submission October 2012 Thomas Kürner, TU Braunschweig, Germany Pre-requisits to start a Study Group  To start a study group, a more expanded engagement and committment with appropriate spectrum, industry and industry groups such as the IWPC would be beneficial.  Current contributions in the IG THz are focussing on PHY issues. More participants with expertise on MAC, HetNet, SON, cluster radio management are welcome.  How to achieve enhancing awareness on THz Communications and increase participation from industry and experts on MAC?  The following measure has been taken:  A tutorial has been given at the July plenary Slide 5

doc.: IEEE thz Submission October 2012 Thomas Kürner, TU Braunschweig, Germany What happend after the tutorial in July? Excerpt form the meeting minutes (IEEE P thz): –Wrap-up of the Tutorial presentation from July 16: The tutorial triggered a discussion on the next steps to be followed by the IG THz and the possible applications on which a Study Group could be spinned-off from the IG THz. An intensive discussion was held on the concept of nano-cells and backhauling of wireless systems. It was decided to set-up relation with the IWPC-MoGIG WG to increase industry participation. –Discussion on a possible contribution to IEEE WNG during the November Plenary: The IG THz chair informed the group that during the AC meeting on Wednesday the chair of WG 15 motivated the IG THz to make a presentation to WNG during the November plenary offering the creation of a study group. The preparation will be done via the reflector and phone conferences if necessary. Slide 6

doc.: IEEE thz Submission October 2012 Thomas Kürner, TU Braunschweig, Germany What is the impact of a Presentation at IEEE WNG? Typically a presentation to the IEEE WNG is given to propose a new IG or SG. In order to propose a SG this presentation will be necessary. Another option will be just to present a status of the plans of the IG THz to create a SG in the near future to the WNG In order to decide on a presentation and a possible format a IG THz meeting via Telco will take place on Oct. 31, 15 CET Slide 7

doc.: IEEE thz Submission October 2012 Thomas Kürner, TU Braunschweig, Germany Questions to be discussed during the Telco What are the possible applications that could be subject to a SG potentially starting within the next 12 months? What are ongoing activities in research and industry, that could suppport the work in a SG and a future TG? What is the optimum time line for these applications to trigger the creation of a SG? Is the market ready – who will be the industry sponsors to drive the standards activity? Slide 8

doc.: IEEE thz Submission October 2012 Thomas Kürner, TU Braunschweig, Germany Decision and Preparation of a Presentation to WNG At the end of the Telco a decision has to be made on whether a presentation will be made to WNG. If the answer is yes, a decison is required on what should be presented. Proposal for the procedure: –A small editorial team is set-up, which will prepare a draft of the presentation via before the plenary meeting –The draft will be presented to the IG THz in San Antonio on Tue AM2 –Presentation to the WNG on Wed PM2 Slide 9
