The goal of this project is to have every attending physician in the Department of Pediatrics at Loyola University Medical Center current in CPR Background & Purpose Pediatric providers should lead by example 1. Receive training Teach basic life support courses Physicians training residents and caring for patients should be able to offer the most current techniques in BLS in the event of an emergency. Attending physicians with proper training can supervise codes more effectively and comfortably. 1 Pyles LA, Knapp J, and the Committee on Pediatric Emergency Medicine. All Physicians Should Be Current In CPR To Maintain Standards Of Care In-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes are very poor, with less than a 20 percent survival to discharge rate 2. The chain of survival, first conceptualized for out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest, applies to in-hospital arrest as well. Successful resuscitation requires early recognition of cardiopulmonary arrest, early activation of trained responders, early CPR, early defibrillation when indicated, and early advanced life support (ALS) 2. 2 American Heart Association (N.D.) retrieved May 1, 2008, from Magnet Forces of Magnetism Force 7: Quality Improvement The organization has structures and processes for the measurement of quality and programs for improving the quality of care and services within the organization. o Nurses were trained as BLS instructors. o All attending physicians in the Department of Pediatrics (111) were surveyed to determine: o Current rate of certification o Availability for training (dates and times) o Offered classes: o At main hospital campus. o At outpatient satellites. o On multiple dates and times. Solutions Implemented Confidential: For Quality Improvement Purposes Only
Analysis Analysis o 76 % of attending physicians did not respond to two separate data collection surveys. o Did they feel there was a risk to their response? o Possible concern about how the data would be used. o Would it be safe to assume that this percentage of attending physicians are not current in BLS? o Physicians that were offered classes at their convenience (location and time) attended them. Next Steps o Continue scheduling classes quarterly. o Renew physicians every two years. o Seek divisional support to encourage 100% compliance with participation. o Encourage hospital-wide participation in the project. o Encourage hospital participation in the American Heart Association’s National Registry of CardioPulmonary Resuscitation program.
