UGLIES By: Scott Westerfeld

Information Book: UGLIES Author: Scott Westerfeld Total # of Pages: 425 # of pages per day: 15 Start date: 11/13 Due date: 2/22 Genre: Science Fiction Part A Tally saw the Croy’s face Word: Page: monoculture Part of speech: noun Definition: the use of land for growing only one type of crop. Sentence from the book: “One of the most beautiful plants in the world. But too successful. They turned into the ultimate weed. What we call a monoculture.” Your sentence: In forestry, monoculture refers to the planting of a single species of tree crop

Part B: Setting The setting of this book is sometime in the future in New Pretty Town, the Rusties, and the Smokies.

Part D: Write a plot summary of the book. The plot of my book is when Shay decides to run away to the Smokies, and she asks Tally to come with her but she refuses. A couple days later, Tally’s birthday came, she could finally turn pretty, but the Specials wouldn’t let her turn pretty until she helped them find Shay to her fullest potential. Apparently helping them to her fullest ability was finding her. Shay had left a note that only Tally could translate so Tally was off to the Smokies in search of her.

Part E Make a connection with a character or an event in the book. Write a description of the connection between the book and your own life. Some of the characters in this book remind me a lot of some of my Friends. Shay reminds me a lot of my friend Alex. Alex isn’t afraid to be different like Shay. They are both outgoing and not afraid to say or do what they feel. I remember when Alex took this picture that I have below Mr. Connelly made fun of her but she didn’t care.

Part F What do you think the author is trying to say? I think the author, Scott Westerfeld, is trying to say that it is ok to be different, not everyone has to be beautiful, and good things aren’t always what they seem to be. Tally wants to be pretty like everyone else, and she doesn’t realize that beauty lies within, which is where Tally goes wrong.

Part H Choose a short passage (3-5 sentences) from the book that you really liked. Copy it and describe why you like it. Tally saw the Croy’s face peering wide-eyed through one of the tiny windows, and planted her powerjack under his door it whined to life, and thick metal screeched as it bent upward. “David, they know something’s up!” she called. I liked this short passage for two specific reasons. The first reason is because it was really descriptive, when it says “Tally saw the Croy’s face peering wide-eyed through one of the tiny windows,” it could have said Tally saw the Croy’s face through a window, but it was more descriptive. Secondly I like how it flows, sometimes books use to many descriptive words in one paragraph but they balanced it out perfectly.

Part I Illustrate a character or scene from the book as you pictured it in you mind. Write about what you drew and why. This picture is what Tally saw from her window it is New Pretty Town, I drew it because I liked how it was written, and this exactly how I imagined
