Oscar Pistorius Guilty

A judge found Oscar Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide, the South African term for unintentionally -- but unlawfully -- killing a person. The verdict Friday comes a day after Judge Thokozile Masipa cleared Pistorius of murder in the killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The customary maximum prison sentence for culpable homicide is 15 years, but a typical sentence is five to eight years. Sentencing could be weeks away and will come after more legal argument. The judge said that Pistorius did not intend to kill his girlfriend, she said, accepting his defense that he thought someone had broken into his house and that he believed he was defending himself. Pistorius, 27, has always admitted firing the bullets that killed his girlfriend Steenkamp, then a 29-year-old cover model about to turn reality TV star. He pleaded not guilty to murdering her in his home on Valentine's Day last year, claiming that the killing was a tragic mistake. But the judge also noted that But in grabbing his gun and heading toward the supposed threat, Pistorius "acted too hastily and used excessive force.“ Pistorius could be seen crying at times during the reading of the lengthy verdict. Experts say the combined energy from two recent solar events will arrive at Earth on Saturday, prompting the Space Weather Prediction Center to issue a strong geomagnetic storm watch. The sun has released two ejections in the past two days, and both are linked to solar flares. NASA says the second flare is an X1.6 class, putting it in the most intense category. The energy from those two ejections is heading toward Earth. Space weather experts aren't sure what this solar storm will do. Earth's atmosphere usually protects us on the ground, but you might want to keep a flashlight handy. NASA says some satellites tumbled out of control for hours during what's known as the Quebec Blackout. The space shuttle Discovery was in orbit at the time and had a mysterious sensor problem that went away after the storm, NASA says. On the upside, solar storms also create beautiful aurora. Aurora watchers in the northern United States who are outside major metropolitan areas should be watching the skies tonight.
