A Misguided Maxim  “You can be anything you want to be, if you just try hard enough” (Rath, 2007, p. 5).  “You cannot be anything you want to be – but you can be a lot more of who you already are” (Rath, 2007, p. 9).

Tenacity or Insanity  Rudy Ruettiger – Notre Dame football player?  Tiger Woods – PGA champion?

The Hedgehog Principle  The parable of the Hedgehog and the Fox (Collins, 2001)  Figure out where you have the greatest potential to develop (i.e. your strengths)

A Recipe for Strength Talent (a NATURAL way of thinking, feeling, or behaving) X Investment (time spent practicing, developing your skills, and building your knowledge base) __________________________________ = Strength (the ability to consistently provide near- perfect performance)

Strategies for Weaknesses  Establish systems to help manage your weaknesses  Partner with someone whose strength is your weakness  Be ever cognizant of your blind spots  Others?

Dr. Moore’s Strengths  Learner  Strategic  Achiever  Intellection  Ideation

Discussion Questions  How do you reconcile using your strengths when constantly asked to use your weaknesses?  Does the Hedgehog Principle and playing to your strengths imply individual purpose in life?  Why is figuring out your strengths important to leadership?
