INTRODUCTION Motifs are everywhere—on T-shirts, in movies, in choruses of pop songs. Yet most folks could not define the word. A motif is a repeating, artistic pattern or design. In literature, a motif can appear as dominant, repeating language, imagery, symbolism, parallel plot events, and any literary device. Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys uses several motifs to unify the story of Fat Charlie and his trickster father.

As organizing patterns, Gaiman centers his motifs around African folklore. One major motif in the novel would be ________________________________.
