Multiplex and Art House Cinemas

What are the attractions of the Multiplex Cinema? What are the attractions of the Art House Cinema? What demographic is each aiming for? How can you tell? To what extent are the two types of cinema in competition with each other? Why is there a Picture House in Cambridge but not in Huntingdon?

Areas where the two have gone into competition: Art House cinemas exhibit some big blockbuster films to subsidise the screenings of niche market films. This links to the desire for both major and independent cinemas to gain widespread appeal and crossover success, e.g. Les Miserables

Other competitive areas Special screenings: Kids’ clubs Pensioner screenings Student events Autism Friendly events

Technology and competition Digital technology expands what both exhibitors can show, e.g. opera, theatre, concerts, sports events, interviews with directors

Key areas for possible exam debate Demographics Technology Attractions of cinema as point of exhibition Independent/mainstream
