What is Plagiarism??

Plagiarism Buying, stealing, or using someone else’s paper Copying large sections of text without quotation marks or citations Using the words of a source too closely when rephrasing

How to Avoid Plagiarism Give Credit to Appropriate Sources Paraphrase – Restating the text, but still including source information – Paraphrasing IS NOT simply changing words (finding synonyms) or rearranging sentences.

Identifying Plagiarism

Original Passage At the start of the Great Depression, many Americans wanted to believe that the hard times would be only temporary. Plagiarism or Not? At the beginning of the Great Depression, a lot of Americans wanted to think that the hard times would be only temporary.

Original Passage: At the start of the Great Depression, many Americans wanted to believe that the hard times would be only temporary. Paraphrase: Americans hoped that the troubles that they were encountering during the Great Depression would not be permanent.

Original Passage A letter of thanks is a courteous acknowledgment of a gift or of something that was done for you. Plagiarism or Not? A thank you note is a polite acknowledgment of a present or something nice someone did for you.

Original Passage: A letter of thanks is a courteous acknowledgment of a gift or of something that was done for you. Paraphrase: People will often send a thank you note as a way to show their appreciation for a nice gesture or gift.

Paraphrasing Tips Read a passage and try to understand it. Look away from the passage and write it in your own words. Re-read passage to check your work.

Paraphrasing Practice

Toy Story Review Read the first paragraph. Write down your paraphrase of THE FACTS and be prepared to share. (2-3 sentences) Finish reading the article.

Research Topic Source # Facts Note: You can only have information on a card about the same research topic and from the same source!!

Labor Camps 1 Many types of people worked in the labor camps. Some were true criminals – like murderers. Many were innocent or were targeted by the NKVD for minor crimes, like tardiness to work or petty theft.

Research FAQ’s You will need to have at least 5 facts for each of your “Research Topics.” This is a BARE MINIMUM. A good project will likely feature more than 5 facts. You should be able to get information on all of your “Research Topics.” Your goal will be able to answer all of your research questions, but it might not be possible.

Research Topic: NKVD Web site: PBS.org “World War II: Behind Closed Doors” Source Number: 3 The OGPU eventually controlled all security functions within the USSR until it was absorbed into the NKVD (People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs) in Picking up the OGPU’s responsibilities, the NKVD oversaw all aspects of internal and state security. It controlled the police, criminal investigation departments, fire brigades, internal troops, and prison guards.

Make another example Using information found on one of the printouts from a website yesterday, make another note card. Use the number of the web site as the source number. Use “Labor Camps” as the research topic.
