Christopher Columbus B. 1451 d. May 20, 1506 Was an Italian who sailed for Portugal Hmmmmmm Not the 1st European to reach the “New World”---but given credit for it His voyages led to European awareness of the New World--led to European colonialization

1st Voyage Reached the Caribbean islands--he called them San Salvador and Hispanola Thought he was in the West Indies--called the natives Indians: where we get the name Indians Encountered a group called the Taino Pre-Columbus: 5 groups over 10,000 people By 18th century: population decimated by disease, slavery, and assimilation Spanish forced them to work on plantations
