Background Information Born in Italy in 1451 Christopher was a middle aged man when he started to go on his voyages. His most famous trip was discovering the Americas. This voyage took place in A famous saying to remember this date is, “in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Columbus died in 1506, 54 years old. The cause was a heart attack which was believed to be a result of some extreme arthritis swelling. His Voyages were for the country of Spain. His goal was to discover the southern part of India or the “new world”. He became very wealthy in the end.

The Explorations The three famous caravel style ships Columbus used were named, Pinta, Niña and the Santa Maria. These caravels were very spacious and could carry lots of cargo. Columbus sailed to the present day Haiti and Dominican Republic but he was convinced it was India. He soon killed all the native, which he called Indians, and replaced them with slaves from Africa. Not knowing he wasn’t in India he didn’t really choose this route. He made a pretty big discovery in which they called “The New World”.

Finance Christopher Columbus’s Trip was financed by the King and Queen of Spain. This was a driving force for him not to fail on this voyage and let down the King and Queen. Claiming the new land for Spain he came back a huge hero. Using tools such as a compass were helpful even though he got lost!!

Overview Columbus was an important milestone in the discovery of the Americas and the birth of many new countries. All in all his voyage did fail because he did not find a direct water route to India but he it was a big success in many minds.
