Writing for Academic Publication Workshop Heather Hartwell and Susanna Curtin School of Services Management, Bournemouth University 16th June 2006

Getting started Not enough time/what do I do? Fear of rejection? Competition for publication is intense Not easy but be proactive Select journal aligned to your subject - best possibility of being published Start small! But when?

Getting started Review article Most journals have special themes Methodological reflection work in progress part of the PhD study but not inserted into final publication Opinion pieces Develop papers in parallel with dissertation chapters?

Getting started and moving on Trade/professional journals Posters at conferences (proceedings) Conference papers (proceedings) Low impact factor peer reviewed journals High impact more prestigious Editorial board Book chapters

Topic Informative and relevant Write in tandem with your supervisor Know your Journal length of time to peer review acceptance rate for submitted articles

Topic Be a style guru Ensure clarity Coherent story and viable structure Have a planned publishing strategy: i.e. dont give all your results away too soon or in one hit. Rigorous review will give your work and you some standing - quality mark

What makes a good paper? Presents new knowledge – either research findings, theoretical developments, new insight into existing debate, new analysis of existing knowledge or synthesis of literature Grounded in relevant literature Clear methodology Addresses new issues Asks and attempts to answer provocative questions in a persuasive manner Well written with carefully crafted and sustained arguments

Seven steps to heaven Research and writing Presenting work - conferences Targeting a journal Prepare for submission Reviewing process acceptance Proofs and copyright Rejection

Rewards Not financial! Excitement of first paper published Peer reviewed papers insert into PhD – credibility Introduces you to new literature and ideas that you may not have thought of Publish or perish in HE Brings closure to the research and on to the next! Ethical responsibility?

And beyond ……… The key is to be continually writing and networking with other writers and editors at conferences and online newsgroups Editors are always looking for creative and relevant articles that will meet the needs of their readers
