Responsible Care Partnering Workshop Industrial Waste Initiative 24, 25 September 2013 Manal Al Badawi On Behalf of the Industrial Waste Sub-Committee

Our Charter GPCA has established an Industrial Waste Subcommittee to review and recommend effective options for industrial waste minimization and sustainable management thereof across the GCC region. The task force members of the Subcommittee are represented by GPCA member companies. The subcommittee intends to bring in a positive change for managing industrial waste streams by considering best practices and latest technologies. The output from this Subcommittee will assist member companies in complying with the GPCA’s Environmental Protection Code with regard to improving waste management and environmental performance.

Deliverables Defining and quantifying current and predicted industrial waste streams (Questionnaires) Identifying Regional and International best practices Identify cost and energy efficient options to minimum emissions / discharges Identify a process to keep abreast of legislative developments Establish regulatory links for identified solutions.

Support from our Partners Companies should understand their baseline performance and set achievable targets for reducing waste generation. Waste management contractors have a wide range of value- added services to help Companies meet their efficiency and environmental objectives: Detecting and resolving problems quickly and effectively; Identifying materials for recycling and providing solutions to set this up; Bringing best technology for recovering the valuable components of waste; Establishing energy recovery projects where waste streams justify such action; Continuous improvement in resource efficiency (‘3Rs’ program).

Environmental requirements in Contracts Environmental criteria should be incorporated into all phases of the procurement / contract process; Waste Handling companies must have requisite licenses; Contract Technical Assessments should consider: Historical environmental performance Awareness on regulatory environmental requirements Availability of documented environmental policy and procedures Evidence of environmental training and continuous improvement
