Senior Design Project Et 493 Design of a Two-story Office/Apt For: Dr. Cris Koutsougeras Advisor: Mr. R.E. Rode Prepared by Joshua Price
Abstract ● My project was to designing a two-story office/apartment. ● It required knowledge that was acquired throughout courses in the construction concentration. – Largest concentration being in Autocad
Introduction ● Purpose of this project was to design a building within budget that incorporated certain materials – Design a steel framed building – Most steel being used is steel that I already have – Had to plan the structure to incorporate these materials ● Research on materials – what will be the best materials based on feasibility and cost
Procedures ● Three phases for project – Predesign phase – Design phase – Preconstruction phase
Predesign Phase ● Predesign phase also known as the planning phase – Project was defined based on function and size – First task of this phase was the project definition ● Includes activities, functions, and spaces required – This included approximate sizes and relationships
Project Definition ● Function of building – Serve as an office, pool house, and apartment ● First floor – Includes office, half bath, full bath, and laundry room ● Office will be approximately 25’x20’ ● Half bath approximately 6’x6’6” ● Full bath approximately 6’x14’ ● Laundry room approximately 6’x14’
Project Definition ● Relationships of first floor – Office will be the front of the building – Bathrooms and laundry room will be on the backside of the office – Access to the half bath and laundry room will be from office and outside ● Full bath will only have access from outside
Downstairs Floor Plan
Project Definition ● Second floor – Includes bedroom, closet, bathroom, and area for kitchen, living room, and dining ● Bedroom – 15’x15’ ● Closet – 6’x15’ ● Bathroom – 13’8”x15” ● Remaining area – 39’x35’
Upstairs Floor plan
Design Phase ● Consists of schematic design stage, design development stage, and construction documents stage – Schematic design ● Bubble/block diagram ● Preliminary sketch ● Spaces were optimized by laying out the building according to its uses
Design Phase ● Design Development Stage – Schematic design developed further ● Preliminary working drawings – Includes floor plans and elevations ● Construction Documents stage – Construction drawings developed ● Finalized steel design, stairwells, electrical, etc.
Drawings
Preconstruction Phase ● Budget/cost analysis – Used to evaluate feasibility and impact of materials and techniques ● Decide between metal or wood framing ● Went with wood – prices were close and wood is stronger ● Estimate – Materials and labor broken down to develop projected cost ● Schedule – Planning of activities
Budget/Cost Analysis ● Budget for Project is $80,000 ● Estimated total cost is $155, ● Due to total running over budget, project will be broken into phases – Phase 1 – Slab, Structural, and Framing ● Total estimate - $114, ● Savings - $34, ● New total for Phase 1 - $80, – Slightly over budget
