Day 1 Alphabetical Order

Learning Objective Today we will arrange words in alphabetical order (ABC order) “arrange” means to put a specific place Tell your partner what you will do today. What are we going to do today?

Activating Prior Knowledge Have you ever had to number your paper from 1-10? Why did you put 1 first and 10 last? Was 5 in the middle? Why?

Concept Development Arranging words in alphabetical order is when you put words in order of the alphabet. Example: cat, dog, elephant, goat, monkey, turtle

Examples Non-Examples 1. apple1. cat 2. cat 2. dog 3. dog3. elephant 4. elephant4. apple 5. frog5. frog

Concept Development LOOK AT THE FIRST LETTER FIRST!! seal, bell, flag, colors, united, eagle What letter comes first? s, b, f, c, s, or e? b…of course so the word “bell” would go first. 1. bell

Concept Development seal, bell, flag, colors, united, eagle What word would come next? c comes after b…so colors would be next 1. bell 2. colors

Why do you need to know ABC order? You need to know this because when you want to find something in the dictionary, all the words are arranged in alphabetical order.
