Before Mesopotamia and Egypt grew up in great river valleys with rich soil. Greece had no great river valleys. Instead, it had mountains, rocky soil, and many miles of seacoasts. The geography of Greece influenced where people settled and what they did. A great number of Greek cities were located within 60 miles of the sea for easy boat access.
