DOMESTIC ABUSE Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are, or who have been, intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. PREVALENCE 1 in 4 women experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives. In the UK each week 2 women are killed by partner/ex- partner. 1 in 40 of the elderly population experience abuse from a relative, friend or carer. 15% of all reported violent incidents relate to domestic abuse. 1 in 3 child protection cases show a history of domestic abuse, usually to the mother. 42% of the population say they personally know someone who has suffered domestic abuse.

DOMESTIC ABUSE & THE CHURCH It is highly likely that domestic abuse is prevalent in every parish community. Individuals may be recognised or brought to the attention of:- – Priests & Religious – Employees – Volunteers – Members of the parish community
