STREAM STUDY L.I To familiarise ourselves with the Pakuranga stream STARTER: Where is the Pakuranga stream? Can you describe it’s location? Do you know where it starts?

PAKURANGA STREAM

Where does it start?

BACKGROUND The current shape and route of the stream is not its natural course. Until the 1980s the section of the stream at the bottom of Pakuranga College fields was wider and curved more, and the nearby land was flatter. As a result, the land adjacent to the stream was subject to regular flooding. The council undertook major work with the objective of reducing flooding. Therefore, they straightened and narrowed the stream channel and raised up the river banks considerably.

COMPASS DIRECTIONS Do you know your compass directions?

Field Sketching A field sketch describes the area that you are studying and allows you to pick out the features of an area that are important to your study. It doesn’t need to be a perfect piece of artwork, but needs to be sketched in a way that is recognizable of an area.

A good field sketch should include: General shape of the landscape and major landforms/features Major human-built features Specific details relevant to the study in hand Annotation (this means a label that explains/highlights something in the sketch) on and around the sketch A note about the place being drawn A note of the location of the direction being faced A note of the date and time Any other notes to accompany the sketch

Monday Visit to the Pakuranga Stream. Be at class as soon as you can. Bring a pencil and rubber – we will be doing a field sketch and looking at information from WaiCare. Bring a Hat – it may be very sunny Above all – be polite and listen. You are representing our school.
