Music Education Hubs Key recommendation of National Plan for Music Education (2011) Funding for Hubs through Arts Council England replaced previous Music Service funding from Government from September 2012 Embrace a wider range of activity, practice and opportunity than any one provider could manage alone. Seek to build a wide and collective ‘offer’ to Children and Young people - one which considers access, excellence, inclusion and progression. Concerned with music’s potential to impact socially as well as subject in on right Your Hubs: Wiltshire Music Connect Make Music Swindon Make Music Gloucestershire Shared Musical Inclusion programme funded by Youth Music

Music Education Hubs - what that could mean for you Broad interpretation of ‘education’ The Hub of relevance to a range of people / settings in which music takes (or could take place) Commissioners of activities for young people – Freelance Music Leaders – PRUs - Community based activity clubs A ‘place’ through which you will be able to... Connect with each other Find out what’s on offer Get involved in wider projects Access and request Professional Development – Find out about funding Have the opportunity to shape how the Hub will develop

Music Education Hubs – why workforce development? The National Plan calls for more specialism and expertise among all music ‘educators’ Hubs need to coordinate provision to meet CPD needs If we have an overview of a county and its provision then we need to know what skills will be needed, any gaps and how they can be addressed Its in your interests to engage

Music Education Hubs – Purpose of WFD Study - Scope To identify current environment of the music workforce Identify any gaps To understand the requirement thorough a needs analysis

Music Education Hubs – Audiences Salaried & freelance music educators School based staff Management/Leadership skills within Hubs and delivery partners

Music Education Hubs – key issues and findings

We will develop clearer understanding / appreciation of links and benefits evolving from a cycle like this:

Music Education Hubs – Recommendations Recommendations in Phase One Swindon and Gloucestershire to look to engage with the Bath Spa conference Identify further synergies for training need across the geographical area to avoid duplication of effort and funding Its not realistic for hubs to commit to covering freelancers time in using / attending CPD – We should be advocating for proper pay rates that allow for freelancers to make proper space for CPD We need to create / collate CPD that is accessible in a number of ways / places / times / formats so as to maximise accessibility. We need to encourage schools / families to ask more about tutors / music leaders use of CPD and their engagement with the ‘bigger picture’ Hub CPD programme should embrace a range of CPD offers Aggregate elements of online CPD across hubs Ensure that venues / NPOs engage with this too Develop feasible ways to ‘grow’ tutors /music leaders rather than exclude them or disregard their existence and their work that they do

Music Education Hubs – Suggested actions and ways of engaging attendees comments An executive summary of the findings from the research is now available on the three Hub websites: You can respond to any of the findings by ing either:
