Exploring Volume Volume is measured in cubic units, such as cubic meters (m 3 ).

Formulas Rectangular Prism: V = LWH Cylinder: V = πr 2 h L = lengthH = height W = widthR = radius

Ex. 1: Finding the Volume of a rectangular prism The box shown is 5 units long, 3 units wide, and 4 units high. What is the volume of the box? Here’s how to draw a rectangular prism.

Ex. 1: Finding the Volume of a rectangular prism L = 5; W = 3; H = 4 V = LWH V = (5)(3)(4) V = 60 unit 3

Ex. 2 Find the volume of the prism. 8 cm 16 cm 25 cm V = LWH V = 25(16)(8) V = 3200 cm 3

Find the height of a prism with a volume of 480m 3, length of 12m and width of 4m. h 4 m 12 m V = LWH 480 = 12(4)h 480 = 48h 10 m = h 48

A rectangular fish tank has a base that is 6in by 4 in. How much water will it take to fill the tank to a depth of 10 inches?

Destiny is building a square sandbox with sides 4ft long. She wants to put snad 0.85 ft deep in the box how much sand should she order?

A fish tank is 26in tall and has a base that is 12in by 25in. You want to fill the tank to a depth of 24in. How much water will it take?

A driveway is 81 ft long, 6ft wide, and 0.5ft deep. How many cubic feet of concrete will be required to lay the driveway?

You try. Find the volume of the prism. 6 cm 15 cm 33 cm

You try. Find the volume of the cube. 12 ft

Ex. 3: Finding Volumes Find the volume of the right cylinder. V = πr 2 h V = 3.14(8)(8)(6) V = in 3 Here’s how to draw a cylinder.

You try. Finding Volumes Find the volume of the right cylinder. 5 ft 2 ft

Find the volume of the cylinder that has a diameter of 14ft and height of 15 ft. Use 3.14 for pi.

The volume of a cylindical can is 201 cubic cm. If the diameter is 8 inches, find the height. Use 3.14 for pi.

You try. Finding Volumes Find the volume of the right cylinder. 3 m 2 m

What is the volume of a right cylinder with a diameter of 8 inches and height of 5 inches? You try.

Ex. 5: Using Volumes V = πr 2 h 4561 = 3.14(x 2 ) = 37.68x = x = x √
