 This unit will explore the surface area and volume of a variety of 3-dimensional shapes. Students will investigate volume by creating and comparing containers of various shapes, develop a method to find the volume of a pyramid, and find the surface area of real-world objects shaped like prisms. Differentiated instruction and cooperative learning groups will be used throughout this unit.

 Common Core, 7 th Grade Math, Geometry: “Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.”  Common Core, 8 th Grade Math, Geometry: “Know the formulas for the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.”

 In what way is math a part of your everyday life?  How does the world of art and design rely on 3-dimensional figures?  How does the shape of a container affect the volume of the container?  How will the volume of a cube compare with the volume of a square pyramid?  Why isn’t the sum of the areas of a prism the same as the volume?

 You need a working knowledge of the order of operations, how to multiply and divide rational numbers, and an understanding of 2-dimensional figures.  What are some examples of what you know how to do?
