Future at Our Fingertips! Technology in the Classroom

Technology  Expectations of Technology: What is it good for?  Support Learning Needs: So how does this help me?  Ethics of Technology: Good v. Evil in Cyberspace  Equitable Access: All for one, one for all!  School Policy: So what do we do about it?  Parental Support: We need your help!  Resources

Expectations of Technology  There are certain standards mandated for students by the state of North Carolina  Students will practice safe, responsible, and ethical behavior in using technological resources (1.01)  Students will identify use of technology in surrounding environments (1.02)  Students will practice knowledge and skills in the use of technology (2)  Students will use a variety of technologies to access and analyze information (3)

Support Learning Needs  Students will learn to use word processing and desktop publishing for assignments (3.01)  Students will use electronic resources for research (3.02)  Students will use technology for class projects and presentations (3.03)

Ethical Issues in Technology  Copyright Laws What is a copyright? Protection that covers published and unpublished literary, scientific, and artistic works Cite sources for materials in papers, projects, and multimedia presentations (3.4) Internet:  NOT public domain – federal site and expired or abandoned sites only  “Free” web graphics and images – must comply with owner’s terms

Equitable Access  “All students in all schools have access to and are active on the information highway in ways that support engaged learning” (Jones, Valdes, Nowakowski, and Rasmussen)  Basically, all students should have an equal opportunity to use technology regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status

So what we do about it? We now have all the facts about why it is important to use technology in the classroom…so what do we do about it?

School Policy  Our school is now equipped with computers in every classroom.  Advanced technology has been installed in the Special Education classroom to further assist students with a disability.  Technological standards have been set for the students at each grade level which they will be required to meet along with the subject curriculum.  We feel that technology is important to succeed in today’s world and we want to equip our students with all the tools necessary for success.

Parental Support: We need you’re help!  Encourage your teenager to explore different forms of technology in order to express themselves.  Provide them with access to technology on a daily basis.  Be supportive of student’s educational process and provide a home environment conducive to learning.
