A SWOT analysis of 1918 Britain What did the post-war coalition government face?

Strengths Victorious in the First World War Politically stable, unlike Russia and Germany British Empire intact New industries provided skilled jobs

Weaknesses War debt Staple industries had been worked hard in war-time, yet had received no investment International trade had been disrupted, leaving the staple industries with smaller markets The country had lost a generation of young men

Opportunities The coalition faced no real opposition from the Asquith Liberals or from Labour

Threats 5 million soldiers to demobilise The coalition had promised “homes fit for heroes” Membership of unions had increased and they expected better wages and working hours The staple industries were outdated Competition from foreign industries The 1912 Home Rule bill was due to be imposed in Ireland Peace had to be maintained in Europe
