Isaac Newton “One of the Greatest Scientists That Ever Lived”

Newton Was born in 1642 In England Had a rough childhood…  His mom left him when he was 3 years old  He lived with his grandparents

Attended Cambridge University in England Read many books by famous thinkers Had to leave because of the plague Spent his time sitting around thinking… And came up with a way to explain gravity!

He came up with many ideas, but never wanted to publish them He was afraid of what other people would think  He hated to be criticized He only wrote down his ideas when he thought somebody else might do it before he did!

He ended up writing down some pretty big ideas, and is credited with:  The explanation of gravity  Creating calculus (a type of math)  A new theory of light and color  Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion  The invention of the reflecting telescope His most important work was the Principia, which was published in 1687

Newton often had mental breakdowns and would spend many nights awake He also spent a lot of time fighting with Robert Hooke, another scientist at the time Both were members of the Royal Society  Hooke was in charge of experiments  Newton later became the president Newton played a major part in the “Scientific Revolution”

Newton was a professor of optics, but later became “Master of the Mint” He was in charge of all the money in England! He died in 1722 He was the first scientist to be buried at Westminster Abbey

Write a paragraph… Who was Isaac Newton and what did he do?  Include: When did he live? Where did he live? What was his childhood like? What job did his mom want him to have? Where did he go to college? What did he do there? Why did he leave? How did he come up with a way to explain gravity? What was he a member of? What job did he have? What did he discover? What did he write? When did he die? Where was he buried?
