Science From the Latin word scire, which means “to know”.

Fact Truths about nature, supported by observations, experimentation and data.

Theory The most logical explanation for events that occur in nature. –Facts become theories once proven to be right again and again.

Law States that a particular event will always occur if certain conditions are met. –Theories become laws after surviving many tests.

Experiment The process used to solve a problem, test an idea, or demonstrate a known truth.

Purpose A sentence that describes what you will be doing in this experiment. –Example: The purpose of this experiment is to…

Variables Anything that can be changed or measured in an experiment. –For example: Independent, Dependent, and Control Variables

Independent Variable (IV) The single condition that will be changed in an experiment.

Dependent Variable (DV) The condition that will be measured in an experiment.

Control Variable (CV) The baseline for the experiment, it allows you to see how the variables affect the experiment.

Constants The conditions that are kept the same (unchangeable) in an experiment.

Investigative Question A question that can be answered by designing and conducting an experiment. –Contains the Independent and Dependent Variables!!

Hypothesis An educated guess as to what you think will happen during the experiment.
