NO CALL FOR ALCOHOL

 What does the Brain and CNS do?  Anatomy of the Nervous System  If you think of the brain as a central computer that controls all bodily functions, then the nervous system is like a network that relays messages back and forth from the brain to different parts of the body. It does this via the spinal cord, which runs from the brain down through the back and contains threadlike nerves that branch out to every organ and body part.

 Alcohol is a depressant  A substance that inhibits or slows down the central nervous system (CNS). ▪ CNS = the brain and spinal cord  Alcohol affects thinking, judgment and reasoning abilities.

 The stomach is a muscular organ located on the left side of the upper abdomen. The stomach receives food from the esophagus. As food reaches the end of the esophagus, it enters the stomach through a muscular valve called the lower esophageal sphincter.

 Alcohol is quickly absorbed from the stomach and into the blood stream.  Prolonged drinking is related to ulcers and cancers (stomach, mouth, tongue and esophagus).

 Your lungs are in your chest, and they are so large that they take up most of the space in there. You have two lungs, but they aren't the same size the way your eyes or nostrils are. Instead, the lung on the left side of your body is a bit smaller than the lung on the right. This extra space on the left leaves room for your heart.

 Alcohol is exhaled in the breathing process, which is why it can be smelled on your breath.  High alcohol levels slow down breathing…which can cause death.

 The liver helps you by taking toxins out of your blood. Wait! Why do you have toxins in your blood in the first place? Sometimes your body produces them as part of its normal function, like breaking down protein, a component in foods such as meat and nuts.protein

 It takes 1-2 hours for the body to fully oxidize (eliminate) one alcoholic beverage.

 One of the main jobs of the kidneys is to filter the waste out of the blood. How does the waste get in your blood? Well, your blood delivers nutrients to your body. Chemical reactions occur in the cells of your body to break down the nutrients. Some of the waste is the result of these chemical reactions. Some is just stuff your body doesn't need because it already has enough. The waste has to go somewhere; this is where the kidneys come in.blood

 Alcohol is a diuretic, it increases the production of urine from the kidneys.  Drinking can increase the risk of dehydration.

 The small intestines is where digestion is finalized.

 Alcohol is absorbed here and into the bloodstream.

 The heart sends blood around your body. The blood provides your body with the oxygen and nutrients it needs. It also carries away waste.

 Alcohol is a vasodilator, meaning it “opens up” the blood vessels, which in turn lowers blood pressure throughout the body.  Alcohol travels to the brain through the blood stream.

 System of organs in the body that are made to reproduce.  Women who drink during pregnancy risk giving birth to an infant with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

 1. Type of drink 2. How quickly it is consumed 3. Amount of food in stomach 4. Body weight 5. Mental/Emotional state 6. Surroundings 7. Physical Tolerance

 What are 7 refusal techniques that can be used to avoid unhealthy situation? 1. Act confident 2. Have a friend along 3. Use humor 4. Make an excuse 5. Plan your exit 6. Suggest an alternative 7. Delay your decision
