March 4 th, 2015 Ms. Viets LET’S MEASURE! Measurement and Data Grade 1

Let’s Explore Non-Standard Measurement! using our body! We are going to begin exploring measurement by

When using Non-Standard Measurement, it is important to only use one object to measure at a time.

Let’s Practice! We are going to measure the width of our desks. What object should we use?

NOW, LET’S MEASURE THE WIDTH OF THE CLASSROOM! 1.In your group, pick one student to use their body to measure first. 2.With your feet to the wall, lay down flat on your book. Have your partner place the piece of wood at the top of your head, as was seen in the video. 3.Repeat step number two until you have reached the opposite wall. *Be sure to count how many times it takes for you to reach the opposite wall. 4.When you have reached the opposite wall, record how many times it took to reach the opposite wall on your worksheet. *Be sure write the units of the measurement. For example, 5 Ms.Viets or 6 Geralds. 5.Repeat steps 2-4 with the other member of your group.

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN TO PRACTICE! Click on the following links to practice measurement using non-standard units! How Tall? Measuring with Paper Clips How Big Are You?
