WITH YOUR GROUP Describe the significance of the quote. “Our innocence had been replaced by fear and we had become monsters.”

CHAPTER 9 In chapter 9, Beah uses imagery to create mental pictures in the readers mind. Create a 5 column chart with the 5 senses as headings. (sight, smell, taste, touch, hear) Every time you come across imagery that would appeal to any of the 5 senses, reference the page number you found the imagery. Finish reading from page on your own.

CONVERSATION 1.Write a conversation between the two villagers spreading the rumors about the boys. Explain who they are afraid of and why. What do they think will happen? Who do they think is coming? What do they think they are going to do?

COMIC AND ACROSTIC Either draw a comic showing what the fisherman did to the boys or write an acrostic. The comic should explain how the boys were affected by the actions of the fisherman. “This time we were a long way from Mattru Jong. A long way gone. “ (p65) Explain the title by creating an Acrostic poem with the words Long Way Gone. Each letter starts off a sentence that helps to explain a theme and the title of the novel thus far. The first letter has been completed for you. Life has changed and there’s no going back to the way it used to be O N G W A Y G O N E
