Fractured Fairy Tales What Makes a Story a Fairy Tale? 4 Fairy tales nearly always begin with the words Once upon a time or Long, long ago. 4 They usually have a good character and an evil character. 4 They might involve magic or enchantment. 4 A woodland/forest or castle is usually mentioned. 4 There is always a problem, that is eventually solved and the good characters live happily ever after.

Fractured Fairy Tales We are now going to look at a clip from Youtube, after which you should be able to explain what you think a fractured fairy tale is.

What is a Fractured Fairy Tale? A fairy tale designed to be humorous by changing the story in an unexpected way; altering characters, or adding a modern language and events.

A parody is a humorous version of a well known story!

The Three Little Pigs Little Red Riding Hood Hansel and Gretel Cinderella Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Princess/Pea Elves/Shoemaker Rumplestiltskin

Three Billy Goats Gruff Jack and the Beanstalk The Three Bears Puss in Boots The Ugly Duckling Little Gingerbread Man

 Use familiar characters, plots, and settings from traditional fairy tales to create “fractured” versions.

 Setting  Characters  Point of view  Time period  Have characters from different fairy tales meet!

Fractured Fairy Tales You are now going to fracture a fairy tale. You will need to consider the following points: 1.Changing the setting. 2.Changing the personalities of your characters. 3.Writing the tale from the another character’s view point. 4.Changing the problem. 5.Changing the solution. 6.Adding a little humour. 7.Writing a different ending.

 Must be true to form  You may alter the storyline  You may add an unexpected twist  Create a contemporary  (modern) version  Elements of a novel must be present

Select a fairy tale from the list. Read the original version. Identify elements of a novel. Think of ideas for the new story. Write your fractured fairy tale. Use word processor for final copy.
