Early Life  Lyndon Johnson was born on August 27,1908, in central Texas.  The first child of Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr., and Rebekah Baines Johnson.  In 1927 Johnson borrowed $75 to enroll into Southwest Texas State Teachers College at San Maros,Texas.

Early Life Continued  On August 19,1930, Johnson graduated with a B.S degree.  For a few weeks he taught at Pearsall High School, in Pearsell,Texas.  After teaching at Pearsall High School, he took a job teaching public speaking at Sam Houston High School, in Houston, Texas.

Early Life Continued  In November 1931,Congressman Richard Kleberg asked Johnson to come to Washington to work as his secretary, following his election to the House Of Representatives.  For over three ears Johnson held the job and learned how the Congress worked.  In 1933,he was elected speaker of the “Little Congress”.  In the fall of 1934,he briefly attended Georgetown University Law School in Washington, D.C.

Early Political Career  Johnson met Claudia Alta Taylor,on a trip home to Texas. Johnson decided Claudia should be his wife.  Two months later, Lady Bird, as she was known, agreed, and on November 17,1934,they were married in San Antonio.  They took a honeymoon in Mexico.

House Years  At the age of 26,Johnson was the youngest state director.  Johnson entered the special election for the 10 th Congressional District and won the election on April 10,1937.  Johnson worked hard in congress and was selected to the House Committee on Naval Affairs at the request of President Roosevelt.

House Years Continued  In 1938, Johnson was re-elected to a full term in the 76 th Congress.  On June 21,1940, Johnson was selected by Lieutenant Commander in the U.S Naval Reserve.  June 28, 1941, Johnson lost a hard-fought race to stable with W. Lee “Pappy” O’Daniel by 1,311 votes.

Presidency  On July 13, 1960, Johnson was nominated for President of the U.S. at the Democratic National Convention by the speaker of the House of Representatives Sam Rayburn. Johnson received 409 votes, by July 14 he was nominated Vice President.  Johnson took the oath of office for full six- year term in the Senate and quickly resigned.

Presidency Continued  Johnson was sent on missions by President Kennedy to the Middle East, the Far East, Europe, Latin America, Africa, and South Asia.  On November 22, 1963, Lyndon Baines Johnson became the 36 th President of the U.S. with the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas.

Civil Rights  On July 2, Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.The laws protected the right to vote.  It also outlawed most forms of segregation.  North Vietnamese boats attacked the destroyer of USS Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin on August 2,1964.

The Ending of Lyndon B. Johnson  Lyndon Johnson died at his ranch on January 22,1973.  Johnson was buried in the family cemetery at the LBJ Ranch near his birthplace

Facts Of Lyndon B. Johnson  He was the only president to take the Oath of Office on an airplane from a woman.  Johnson's favorites foods were canned green peas and tapioca.  He died one mile from the house he was born in.  He was the youngest senate leader.
