How to Tie Fishing Knots By: Michael Gardner ENGL Due: 3 July 2008

Introduction This process is intended to instruct those that do not know how, to tie a few simple but useful knots. These knots are primarily used for fishing, but can be adapted to a variety of other applications In order to tie the knots, you will need rope, fishing line, or something similar, and something with a loop in it, such as a fishing hook.

Dropper Loop Knot A dropper loop is used to tie a loop in the line above the end of the line. This is used as an attachment point for an additional lure, weight, or hook.

Dropper Loop 2 Create a loop in the line.

Dropper Loop 3 Hold the lines where they cross each other and wrap the loop around the crossover point four to six times.

Dropper Loop 4 Open a hole in the twists where you are holding the lines. –Pass the loop through this hole.

Dropper Loop 5 Hold the loop with your teeth, and pull the knot tight.

Palomar Knot A palomar knot is used to attach a hook or lure to the end of the line. With practice, this knot can be tied in the dark.

Palomar Knot 2 Form a loop in the end of the line and pass it through the hook eye.

Palomar Knot 3 Tie an overhand knot with the loop.

Palomar Knot 4 Pass the hook through the loop.

Palomar Knot 5 Pull the two ends to snug down the loop and tighten the knot.

Improved Clinch Knot An improved clinch knot is used to attach a hook or lure to the end of the line. It is widely regarded as the fisherman’s reliable standby.

Pass the end of the line through the hook eye. Improved Clinch Knot 2

Improved Clinch 3 Bring the end of the line back up and wrap it around the main line six times. –This creates a hole just above the hook eye.

Improved Clinch 4 Pass the tag end through the hole above the hook eye. –This creates another hole between the tag end and the main line.

Improved Clinch 5 Pass the tag end through the newly created hole.

Improved Clinch 6 Pull the tag end and the main line, cinching the knot down tightly on the hook eye.

Tutorials, Video, and Instruction There are many websites that offer instruction on knot tying. To learn more knots, or for more instruction on the three knots discussed previously, visit some of them. A few are listed below. – – – – –
