AUSTIN Independent School District AISD All Staff Virtual Convocation Hosted by Superintendent Meria Carstarphen August 16, 2011

1 1 Theory of Action If we prioritize our work to target our greatest needs; stabilize our plans around a set of proven practices; and optimize our resources by eliminating what doesn’t work, and redirecting it to what works well, then we can focus on the whole child, streamline our systems management and improve human capital.

AUSTIN Independent School District TOP 10 LIST 10. This year we will serve seven-times more students in our revamped, research-based bilingual design – that’s dual- language immersion! 9. Of the approximately 1,100 teachers and staff who were affected by the RIF, AISD helped 800 of them find new employment in the district, retire, or get placed in vacant positions. 8. This year, the district achieved the greatest overall gains in math and science, the two lowest academic subject areas in recent years. 7. AISD received a $63 million Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF) grant and paid $6.7 million in bonuses to 1,330 teachers and administrators in the REACH program. 6. AISD continues to lead the state for the 10th year in a row in the number of National Board Certified teachers, now with 216 in total.

AUSTIN Independent School District TOP 10 LIST 5. AISD has been chosen to partner with two national organizations – CASEL, a leader in Social Emotional Learning, and the Kennedy Center, which sponsors the Any Given Child program to support arts education. 4. AISD had the highest percentage of students scoring at the “Commended” level, in comparison to any of the Big 8 districts in Texas. 3. Student attendance improved by 0.5%, and all school levels had attendance rates above 90 percent for the first time. 2. Since 2003, we have closed the achievement gap by 20 percentage points in reading and social studies; 27 points in writing; 30 points in math; and 39 points in science. 1. 4,182 students graduated on time, and 84% of those graduates applied to college; both numbers are up from last year.
