University Information Technology Why? Tufts identified need to update existing DC built in 1988 Data Center does not meet current or future needs Commissioned Assessment 5/ /2011 From Assessment received approval to continue to Construction Project with deliverables of specifications and construction drawings Brought to Board of Trustees meeting 11/2/12 Approved! 3
University Information Technology High-Level Goals from June Meeting Reduce overall power consumption in preparation for condensed DC during construction and health of PDUs Retire older equipment that is less reliable, less efficient (power and processing) Continue virtualization to deliver better scalability, increased resiliency and efficiency Standardize on Linux, Windows, UCS, central storage vs. local 4
University Information Technology Tactical Goals from June Meeting Begin addressing equipment on left side of Data Center with assumption that plan would be approved – Retirement – Virtualization – Move from Left to Right – Target Dates of end of September for plan, mid- December for completion of plans Present to Board of Trustees 11/2/12 5

University Information Technology Timeline - Preparation What still to do in next 6 weeks What do we do for right side to left side – Time to begin this discussion Virtualization
University Information Technology Phase 1 Construction
University Information Technology Construction Timeline 13 month project Phase 1 begins late December/early January By 4/15/13, we want to target a comprehensive phasing plan from Right->Left. Target end of Phase 1 beginning of June. – This means the Left Side is built out with networking and cabling ready to accept equipment – New UCS Chassis in place in Left to easily VMotion virtuals 4-weeks between Phase 1 and 2 Phase 2 to start in ~July 2012 Projected completion January 2014
University Information Technology Phase 2 Construction
University Information Technology
Challenges Roof location – more crane riggings New roof – connection to Powderhouse School Removing combustibles in roof and floor Multi-Phase approach Keep it running – no scheduled downtime for DC as a whole, though will schedule downtime in maintenance windows to move specific servers/services.
University Information Technology What improves? Expansion capacity for 20 years Move operator’s out of space = less noise, less lighting, fire suppression footprint Robust roof can support overhead cabling Go to 325kw +100kw New power throughout whole building Concurrent Maintainability HVAC improvements – better airflow, more coherent system = better efficiency No combustibles Lights Out facility
