A ratio is a way of comparing amounts. The ratio of pizza to hamburgers is 5:7. The ratio of hamburgers to pizza is 7:5. A group of students had a choice of either hamburgers or pizza for lunch. There were 12 students. 5 chose pizza and 7 chose hamburgers for lunch.

When two quantities increase and decrease in the same ratio, they are in direct proportion. When mixing paint, the ratio of red to white paint is 4:1. + When two quantities increase and decrease in the same ratio, they are in direct proportion. This is the amount of paint needed to paint two sides of the shed. How much of each color would we need if we wanted to paint all four sides of the shed?

+ + If we double the amount of red paint, we have 8 cans. If we double the amount of white paint, we have 2 cans. To paint the whole shed, we would have to double the amount of red paint. When we double the amount of red paint, we must increase the amount of white paint in the same ratio.

16 red cans 4 white cans 16:4 + How much paint would you need to paint two sheds, using the information on the previous page? Move the shed to reveal the answer.
