Journal Prompt  When considering rhetoric, it is easy to limit your thoughts to traditional text forms, like speech and writing.  What other kinds of texts can be persuasive and/or present an argument? How might rhetoric work in these texts?

Ethos, Logos, and Pathos  All advertising is fundamentally an attempt to persuade an audience to  Buy products  Hire services  Support organizations or causes  In order for an advertisement to be effective, it needs to use rhetorical appeals, or ethos, logos, and pathos.

Ethos  Rhetorical appeal that draws on the speaker’s credibility, character, or authority  Makes it easier for the audience to relate to, trust, or place authority in the speaker  In advertisement…  Images of athletes, celebrities, etc.  Name recognition  Style and tone of speaker

Logos  Rhetorical appeal that draws on the text’s logic and/or use of data  Makes the audience think about the information being presented in the text  In advertisement…  Authority figures  Use of statistics, facts  Scientific, factual approach

Pathos  Rhetorical appeal that draws on the audience’s emotions, values, or beliefs  Makes the audience feel something about what is being presented  In advertisement…  Images of children, animals, etc.  Stories that “tug at your heartstrings”

Advertisement Analysis  For each advertisement, identify  Intended audience  Purpose of advertisement  Rhetorical appeals used

Create an Advertisement  Choose one of the following to advertise: a school dance, CHS apparel, 2013 yearbook, school library, homework club  Who is your primary audience?  How could you appeal to this audience?  Your advertisement must make use of rhetorical appeals and include a combination of images and text  Sketch a rough draft before creating final product  You will present your advertisement to the class!
