Focusedl Notes are MANY things…  A way to collect information in class  A way to interact with the information you learned  A way to collaborate with peers  A tool to help you study information What are Focused Notes?

 Yesterday we…  Worked on formatting your page  Wrote an essential question  Read from a text and took notes  Learned some note-taking tips  Please take out…  Your Policies and Procedures packet  Focused Notes from our previous meeting Let’s Review

 In your Policies and Procedures packet, turn to  Today you will be reading the section “CELL PHONE POLICY” (located on the 3 rd page)  Remember to:  Scan the page  Look for headings, words/phrases, images/charts Preparing to Read

 Before reading and taking notes, REVISIT the essential question to focus your reading and note taking… EQ: What are important school wide policies and procedures and how do they affect me as a student? Preparing for Focused Notes

 Now READ the section on “Cell Phone Policy” Starts: “Students are allowed to carry their cell phones on campus. However, with this privilege comes… Ends: “… Student Placement Review Committee (SPRC) for a possible transfer, cell phone confiscated and returned to parent” Preparing for Focused Notes

BEFORE we take notes, REMEMBER…  Some quick TIPS for taking notes  SKIP lines between ideas  AVOID writing complete sentences  USE symbols, abbreviations, graphics when possible  INDENT to show relationships between ideas Preparing for Focused Notes

 Before writing your notes, ask yourself-  What is the main idea of this section of text?  HINT: Look at the heading  How should you write this main idea in your notes?  HINT: Look at the other main ideas in your notes Write the main idea of the text in your notes… Taking Focused Notes

 Following the main idea, let’s look at details  Examine the first paragraph  What are some important details related to the essential question?  Remember to indent when writing each of those details Write the details from the first paragraph of the text in your notes… Taking Focused Notes

 After you’ve finished taking notes, check the quality of your notes by working with a partner  With your partner check the…  Details included in your notes  Are you able to edit your notes?
