What is chemistry?!

“Chemistry is… …the art and science of substances and their transformations.” …a science. It is a way of knowing reliably the world at an intermediate level.” …the science not so much of the hundred elements, but of the infinite variety of molecules that may be built from them.” from Myth Busters article

Chemistry is… …a systematic study (science) …the study of connections between the everyday world and the molecular world …the study of the composition and properties of matter. …the study of the reactivity of substances …the creation and study of organic and inorganic substances Words to explore further

Where in the world is chemistry? A story… One fine summer morning two young fish are swimming along in the ocean when they encounter an older fish. The older fish says, “Morning boys. How’s the water?” The two younger fish keep on swimming, and don’t answer. Finally, one of the younger fish looks at the other one and says, “What in the world is water?” Connect this to chemistry?

More questions… What is science? How can we connect the everyday and molecular worlds? –Learn about scale What is matter? What is a substance? How are they related? –Review types of matter
