Laura Judson Head of ICT GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

To promote a challenging, positive and welcoming learning environment, enabling all learners to succeed as independently as they are able. To enable all learners to fulfil their potential to the best of their ability, by providing interesting and motivating lessons; Students should then be able to develop creativity by exploring new concepts and taking risks; thus raising the stakes throughout life. This should leave them with a desire to develop further knowledge within the subject. GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

Students are on task and enthusiastic Behaviour is on the whole good Learning dialogue occurs between peers If working in groups – Often positive noise Students are enjoying what they are doing Teacher should be having fun! Students are making progress (Sometimes without even knowing it!) Students are the focus, not the teacher GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

Should not have to battle for control Students look forward to lessons Positive classroom environment Students want to make progress, so we become enablers rather than pushers Students become independent learners As we are doing something different can provide us with a challenge, which develops us professionally GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

Students make progress whilst enjoying themselves They look forwards to their ICT lessons Can provide them with a change, breaks up the school day Become enthusiastic learners, as a result can be more confident to contribute to discussions Willing to work with others See the teacher in a positive light - Respect GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009 Planning Time Plan collaboratively with colleagues and split sections of SOW between the whole department Poor Student Behaviour Could be as a result of boredom. Possibly an interactive and fun starter will get them engaged and therefore their behaviour will improve Lack of Experience Possibly regarding group work etc. Observe other colleagues in the dept teach the same task. Discuss positives and negatives Take a Chance! Lack of Resources You could create them, the dept could fund them, as a dept you could collaboratively create / find

Wealth of resources available to us: Interactive whiteboards Control Technology Multimedia – Sounds / Music / Video Graphics / Animations Online Resources Interactive Software GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

Put yourself in their shoes Make use of Starters & Plenaries Utilise Group Work regularly Don’t give students the expected! Let students make some decisions – Ownership Focus on the process, not the outcomes Mix it up – Don’t use one method excessively GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

Clair York Extended Leadership and Professional Tutor GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

Sequential Learning Clear Lesson Aims and Outcomes Pace and Challenge Assessment for Learning Interactive and Engaging Lessons GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

To make good progress, students need continuity and opportunities for development KS3 Year 8 planning needs to build and extend their achievements in Year 7 Show students how teaching and learning will help them develop their knowledge, skills and understanding Show them what they are aiming to achieve by the end of the Key Stage and Key Stage 4 GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

These should be clear and unambiguous Aims – these point students in the right direction but do not tell you how to get there. e.g. ”To develop a knowledge and understanding of ……….” Learning objectives/outcomes – these are detailed methods of carrying out the aims. They are measurable statements and can therefore be assessed e.g. “By the end of the session, learners will be able to ………….” GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

Moving the lesson forward purposefully Minimum number of distractions Tasks accessible to all learners from arrival Clear expectations Adhering to given time frames Clear differentiated tasks key in all lessons GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009 It involves using assessment in the classroom to raise achievement Teacher planning should provide opportunities for both learner and teacher to obtain and use information re-progress toward learning goals Learners should be as aware of the “how” within their learning as of the “what” they are learning

Should possess the ability to seek out and gain new skills, knowledge and understanding Engage in self-reflection and identify the next steps in their learning Teachers should equip learners with the desire and capability to take charge of their learning through developing the skills of self-assessment GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

Have emphasis on learning intentions Share them with students and other adults in the classroom Give assessment criteria for feedback, marking, peer and self assessment Differentiated classroom groups Built in review time and flexibility Notes of students who need additional or consolidation work Time for guided group sessions for explicit formative assessment opportunities Adjustments highlighted or crossed out showing what did or did not work and why GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

Independent Enquirers Reflective Learners Creative Thinkers Team Workers Self Managers Effective Participators This stands for Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills These skills are distinctive and coherent They are interconnected They have been embedded into the new National Curriculum GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009

Independen t Enquirers Process and evaluate information in their investigations, planning what to do and how to go about it. They take informed and well-reasoned decisions, recognising that others have different beliefs and attitudes. Creative Thinkers Think creatively by generating and exploring ideas, making original connections. They try different ways to tackle a problem, working with others to find imaginative solutions and outcomes that are of value. Reflective Learners Evaluate their strengths and limitations, setting themselves realistic goals with criteria for success. They monitor their own performance and progress, inviting feedback from others and making changes to further their learning. Team Workers Work confidently with others, adapting to different contexts and taking responsibility for their own part. They listen to and take account of different views. They form collaborative relationships, resolving issues to reach agreed outcomes. Self Managers Organise themselves, showing personal responsibility, initiative, creativity and enterprise with a commitment to learning and self-improvement. They actively embrace change, responding positively to new priorities, coping with challenges and looking for opportunities. Effective Participator s Actively engage with issues that affect them and others. Play a full part in the life of their school, college, workplace or wider community by taking responsible action to bring improvements for others as well as themselves.

Technological Change Looking back at the development of computers over time, will man still be the most powerful machine on earth by the year 3000? Healthy Lifestyles What effect does what we hear have on the way we feel? Enterprise How can we use Spreadsheet Modelling to make good decisions in business? Global Dimensions How can we use video to change people’s attitudes and actions? Each Unit has a “BIG QUESTION” GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009 Identity & Cultural Diversity How can we use the Internet to create a more tolerant global society?

Technological Change Pupils have a basic introduction to the school ICT network and using Photoshop design a computer that will be available in the year Healthy Lifestyles Pupils create a questionnaire to find out what music makes people feel good. Pupils then use Audacity to create an audio clip to promote well being and a healthy lifestyle. Enterprise Pupils will setup a theme park and will setup and use a spreadsheet to make good business decisions. Global Dimensions Pupils will create a video using Windows Movie Maker to save an endangered species of their choice. Identity & Cultural Diversity Pupils will create a website celebrating the cultural diversity of pupils at Mascalls school. These units are aimed at meeting the needs of the new Curriculum, whilst developing personal learning and thinking skills within students. GTP ICT Specialist Session Friday 20th March 2009
