Why Digital Libraries are used for University Education : A Case Study of FEAT Library Dr. A. Manimekalai Asst. University Librarian Facylty of Engg. & Tech. Library, Annamalai University & Ms. K.A. Vidhya, M.Tech(Comp. Science)-II Year Pondicherry University, Puducherry Tamilnadu- India

Why DL  Changes in Education  Quest for knowledge among academics  Teachers to exhibit job-hopping behavior  Institutions to provide Global Learning Infrastructure  Influence of Online Learning

Overview  Digital Library Initiatives in FEAT Library  Printed & E- collection  Budget allocation  Productivity of scientific publications  Digital resource usage  User satisfaction of the users

Themes for discussion  hardware development in the library;  software development in the library;  collection development both in print and e- resources;  Productivity output  user strength and usage satisfaction among the users in using the e- resources; and  manpower development in the library with computer application.

Hardware development

Table-1 Hardware development at the FEAT Library S. No. Items Hardware Server Client Scanner Barcode System Barcode scanner Printer

SW Development  1990’s self developed package  2003 Libasoft  2005 – DL initiated with Green stone package  2007 – D Space installed

Printed Books

Usage Satisfaction Rating  highly useful;  moderately useful;  and less useful.  The scores assigned are : 3;2;1 respectively and ANOVA test is carried out to know about the association between them.

ANOVA Two way classification for the themes Used Source of Variation SD SDDFMSF P- Value F- Critical Themes worked on Types of Users Error Total

ANOVA Classification to know about the significant difference between the users mentioned above in five types. The ‘F’ value for the themes they worked on various aspects ( 3.55) is greater than that of the F critical Value at 5% significant level ( 2.71), while some users (1.50) which are less than the critical F value ( 2. 87). So there is a significant variation among the themes they worked upon, where as no such significant difference exists among the five types of users using the library.

Impact of E- resources at the FEAT Library  e- resources work as a catalyst and expedite the research among the users  resource sharing is possible through out the campus/ departments  the library and the computer services are being integrated and brought revolution in the Faculty.  The consortium with the INDEST and being a member to international and National organizations, the FEAT could provide better service for the past 3 years  Due to the institution as a member to AICTE, it has the privilege of accessing some of the full text journals like, ASCE, ASME, and IEL online ( IEEE, IEE Journals) for free of cost.  DELNET Is also Playing a vital role in document delivery & ILL service

Suggestions for future Development- HW  to implement a strong network based library and to bring effectiveness in research a sophisticated and stable hardware components to be established in the FEAT Library  as the databases and the journal articles are in.pdf format along with images, nearly 100 KB of storage is needed for each page to be downloaded. So there is a need for heavy storage/ back up medium.  For example, the FEAT library is subscribing the Science Direct and ACM digital Library through INDEST consortium. About 600 students used to access the internet facility. To prepare a subject gate way, after hours a need for heavy storage/ back up medium.

Manpower  the library professionals should know their responsibilities and their vital role to provide high quality information in sharing his/ her expertise across disciplines using web & web based e- resources.  They should work with service motive  All professionals should try to equip themselves to deliver the service in the e- environment as library work is knowledge work

Thank You
