An Introduction to Invertebrates
Examples: insects, crustaceans, arachnids, centipedes, millipedes
Arthropods General Characteristics: Jointed appendages
Phylum Mollusca Means “soft”…refers to their bodies
Phylum: Platyhelminthes, Phylum: Nematoda, Phylum: Annelida.
Anamalia Phyla Characteristics. Phylum Porifera System of pores through which water passes and food is captured Sponges are either radially symmetrical.

Prepared by T. Madhavan & K. Chandrasekaran, Lecturers in Zoology, Directorate of School Education., Pondicherry. These are triploblastic, bilaterally symetrical, metamerically segmented animals Body is covered by a thick chitinous cuticle forming an exoskeleton. Body segments have jointed legs. Distinct cephalization. The Head has a pair of compound eyes. Each compound eye is made up of Several sub-units called Ommatidia

Prepared by T. Madhavan & K. Chandrasekaran, Lecturers in Zoology, Directorate of School Education., Pondicherry. Presence of open circulatory system The Body cavity is filled with blood. It is called Haemocoel. They exhibit sexual dimorphism.

The body is divided into head, muscular foot and visceral mass. The body is covered by a mantle and a shell. Respiration is effected by gills.

ECHINODERMATA They are Marine organism. The Adults are radially symmetrical but the larva shows bilateral symmetrical. Presence of water vascular system. Locomotion is effected by tube feet. The body surface has several spines.
