THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE In the p residential election of 1860, Hannibal Hamlin, a Senator from Maine, ran as Lincoln's vice president. On his visit to New York in February 1860, the fifty- one-year-old Lincoln posed for his photograph. He appears tall and confident. The pose became known as Lincoln's “Cooper Union” photograph. “To this place and the kindness of these people, I owe every thing. John Wilkes Booth was the president’s assassin. Born in Maryland, he was a well- known actor of the time. “The president is shot!” Thousands watch as Lincoln’s funeral procession makes its way up Broadway in New York City.

After Lincoln’s death, artists often pictured him with George Washington. Washington had been named the “father of our country.” Lincoln was called the nation’s “savior.” One of the most important is the Lincoln National Monument. This sculpted image of Lincoln by Victor D. Brenner was used in designing the Lincoln cent.
