The History of The Internet By, Joseph Matchett IV

The internet has revolutionize the computer and communications world like nothing before. Finally, the internet has world- wide broadcasting capabilities.

The internet today is a widespread information infrastructure, the initial prototype of what is often called the National or (Global or Galactic) Information Infrastructure. The Internet represents one of the most successful examples of the benefits of sustained investment and commitment to research and development.

The First Record description of Networking was written in a series of memos by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT in In late 1966 Lawrence G. Roberts went to DARPA to develop the computer network concept and quickly put together plans for the “ARPANET”

In 1964 Leonard Kleinrock at MIT published the first paper on PACKET SWITCHING in This concept was introduced instead of using circuits, which as a major step along the path toward computer networking. The other concept was to make computers to talk together.

To explore this concept, in 1965 Kleinrock along with Thomas Merrill and Lawrence Roberts connected the TX-2 computer in Massachusetts to the Q-32 in California with low speed dial-up telephone line creating the first small wide-area network.

Computers were added quickly to the ARPANET. December 1970 the Network Working Group (NWG) finished the initial ARPNET Host-to-Host protocol, called the Network Control Protocol (NCP) this was completed during the period from

In October 1972, Robert E. Kahn introduced the ARPNET at the International Computer Communication Conference. The was also the introduction of the “hot” application, electronic mail ( ). This was largest network application for over a decade.

This was a harbinger of the kind of activity we see on the World-Wide-Web today, namely, the enormous growth of all kinds of people-to-people traffic.
